NEWSWomen's Premier League (WPL)

Jay Shah claims that ‘one state’ will host the WPL in 2024.

Beginning in the “second or third week” of February, “one state” in India will host the second Women’s Premier League competition. Jay Shah, the secretary of the BCCI, reaffirmed this to reporters on Saturday following the WPL auction in Mumbai.

“It is decided that we will have the tournament in February,” he stated. “We will most likely begin in the second or third week.

“To improve logistics, the event will only take place in one state in terms of location. This time, logistics are crucial to us; maybe, we can discover out how to have more venues the next time.

“We may carry it out in Uttar Pradesh or Bangalore, Karnataka. We have so many locations, including Ahmedabad, Rajkot, and in a few years, Baroda will be able to construct their own stadium in Gujarat. It is essentially a collective call made by the BCCI and the teams. Together, we shall decide when we sit down. We’ll inform you. Without a doubt, it will only be in one state.”
The Brabourne Stadium and the DY Patil Sports Academy served as the two venues for the first WPL tournament last year, which was limited to Mumbai. The current women’s international season for India will only be held in Mumbai and will include matches against Australia and England.

Shah responded, “The domestic season is going on, so we will have to see – where the venue is available, we will have it,” when asked if there was a plan for India Women to play in other states or cities. We don’t want to organize matches in Mumbai alone; there are [other] matches taking place in Gujarat, Chandigarh, and Ranchi.”
