IPL 2023: Most Wickets in this Season
The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) won the IPL 2023 after defeating the Gujarat Titans (GT) in the rain-interrupted last-ball dramatic Final to win their fifth IPL championship. We are discussing IPL 2023’s top wicket-takers here. While batsmen dominated the IPL 2023, there were numerous outstanding bowling performances as well. The players that have handled the ball the most consistently during this competition are the focus of this article.
- The top three wicket-takers in an IPL season came from the same side for the first time in league history. With 28 wickets, Mohammed Shami had the second-highest total of any Indian bowler during an IPL season. With 32 wickets in IPL 2021, Indian bowler Harshal Patel holds the record for most wickets in an IPL season (together with the overall most wickets record).
- Rashid Khan, an Afghan leg-spinner, tied the IPL record for most spinner wickets in a season with 27. Yuzvendra Chahal, an Indian leg-spinner, earlier claimed 27 wickets in IPL 2022.
- As a left-arm bowler for CSK, Indian left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja ranks second with 20 wickets in an IPL season. In this list, Ashish Nehra, a former left-arm Indian bowler, holds the record with 22 IPL 2015 wickets.
- Mohammed Shami (28 wickets), Mohit Sharma (27 wickets), and Rashid Khan (27 wickets), the top three wicket-takers for GT in the IPL 2023, all broke the previous mark for most wickets taken by GT in a single IPL season. Mohammed Shami’s 20 wickets in the IPL 2022 set the previous record.
- For a MI spinner in an IPL season, Indian leg-spinner Piyush Chawla recorded the second-highest number of wickets. With 24 wickets during IPL 2013, former Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh holds the record for the most MI wickets by a spinner in a single season.
- Indian leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi recorded the second most wickets by an LSG bowler in an IPL season (16 wickets). The record is 18 wickets by the Indian pacer Avesh Khan in IPL 2022.
- The second-most RR wickets by a spinner in an IPL season were taken by the Indian leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal (21 wickets). With 27 wickets in the IPL 2022, Chahal also owns the record on this list.
- Varun Chakravarthy’s 20 wickets for KKR in IPL 2023 set a record for an Indian bowler’s most wickets in a season. He held the previous record for most wickets with 18 in the IPL 2021.
